Behind her Lens

Kate-Lynn Lupo is one of the best photographers I know, and today, we invited some people out for a photoshoot in a downtown Whitby studio. She did a basic lighting “workshop” and we spent the afternoon taking pictures.

What made this day so special is the opportunity I was given to photograph Kate-Lynn. I’ve known her since grade 2, we walked home from school together almost every day from grades 9 through 12, we joined our high school’s photography club, and we spent many hours going on random adventures throughout town. Her photos have always inspired me, and I feel so lucky to have been blessed with this life long friend.

Did I mention all the things she’s done for my career? From being brutally honest and properly critiquing my work, to answering my frantic calls when stressed over an assignment … but all the while still encouraging me every step of the way. I still feel like I have a lot to learn before I reach her level, but she’s always willing and excited to help teach me.

Here’s the last set of photos we took. I think these photos are adorable, and really capture the fun and silly side I love about Katey. I must say, it was a great start to our long weekend here in Ontario.

  1. Your photos and your subject are lovely. It is so wonderful to have a good dear friend like you have. I have one too. My friend Lisa. My bestest since I was 15 years old and moved cross country from all I knew in California to Rhode Island where I not only knew no one but was also 3000 miles away from my parents. I hope that your friendship continues for a lifetime.

    1. It sounds like Lisa was a blessing in your life. You always find the best things, in situations which may be hard or a bit difficult. That’s what I think. I have no doubt our friendship will continue … no matter what, we’ve always found time to talk and hang out. Even if we don’t talk for months, the next time we meet, it will be like we just saw each other. Funny how that is sometimes. 🙂

    1. Je vous remercie! Certaines de ses expressions sont drôles, non? Elle est vraiment une joie à être autour. Je suis heureux que vous avez apprécié les photos.

    1. I did a bit of sharpening on her eyes, but for the most part, they are actually quite bright and beautiful! I wish my eyes popped that much!

  2. New friends are like silver;
    Old friends are like gold
and are few and far between.

A great tribute to a friend. I’m sure you are both there for one another whenever needed and for whatever reason. Nice portraits!

    1. Thanks so much Phil! It was really an awesome day and great learning experience. That’s a really cuter poem, too!

  3. Hi Emily!
You did a great job capturing the two portraits of your best friend Kate-Lynn…
it’s wonderful to have a mentor to help you learn how to push the edge of the envelope in photography.
i’m self taught and had little to no feedback until i started my photoblog in SC…
since then i have received all kinds of wonderful advice from some of the best from around the world…
You’ve got a lot of talent so use your instincts and go shoot the moon!
    ….peter:)

    1. I am self taught, as well. I actually have never taken a single course on it in my lie, but a lot of people around me are into photography … so I’ve had a few people be honest with me, but it’s really helped improve. I am still trying to find my style, but I think it’s coming along!

    1. haha Ginnie … I am a Nikon user myself, but all my friends seem to shoot with Canon … not sure I will ever switch over though. I did own a Rebel once, but I could never get used to it. So I traded it, and went back to Nikon. That’s when I bought my D3100!

    1. Thanks RJ 🙂 It was such a great day, and I love that photo of us too … it actually turned out better than I expected.
