Great White North

What a dumping of snow! Southern Ontario got hammered today. The Greater Toronto Area alone has received 15-20 centimetres of the white stuff – and we got off lucky. But I must say, I love it.

It’s been years since I’ve seen this much snow (it was at least five inches above my ankles) – probably since I was in grade school. But instead of staying indoors all day, I decided to ask my mom to join me outside – in this winter wonderland – to shoot some fun photos! It took about an hour of snapping, but I think our “session” was successful. Thanks, Mom!

But what about the rest of the country? Seeing as many of the bloggers who stop by this site are not from the Great White North,  I wanted to compile images that depict our country’s winters using images I found by other independent artists at Saatchi Art.

This first image is shot by Indonesia photographer Kris Ham. During his travels, he was able to capture a photo of some skiers across the park at Mount Royal in Montreal, Quebec.

Artist S J Emberton was able to get a great candid shot of the empty, snow-covered and desolate Keats Street in Saskatchewan.

And I’ll leave you with something a bit more local. North Bay’s shot the slick road conditions in a series she titles Spring Drive.”

  1. What great fun! Brought back a lot of memories! Really was a snowy, cold winter wonderland out there today! 🙂

  2. Amazing snow shots! Reminds me of a photo shoot it did last winter. I checked out Saachi as you linked it…some really great works of art there. Great job on these.

  3. You seem to have just a bit more snow than us here in Sweden, actually there’s almost no snow left and it’s raining…strange weather for february. Nice shots also!

    1. We have been having lots of snow off and on. Most of the snow has melted … but we’re expecting even more by the end of the week! Nice to hear from you, Mats!

    1. I was outside for quite sometime, trying to really capture the snow in its powered texture. We were out there for probably about an hour.

  4. I must say, Emily, I like YOUR images the best because of the childlike joy you’ve so delightfully shown. THIS is what winter is all about for me, having grown up in Michigan. Sadly, winter has not yet arrived here in Dutchland. Now I wonder if it will this season??? 🙁

    1. Well, we still have March! Sometimes snow falls then, as well. But that’s too bad you didn’t get much. But on the bright side, no driving on slippery or slushy roadways! 🙂

  5. Hi Emily,

A great series of wintershot’s you posted on this gorgeous website!!
Really love the wintertime but in Holland we have 10degrees C at the moment and rain.
    See you around…

    1. Thanks Kristan! I really do love the snow … but it’s starting to look like spring is on the way. I am glad I found time to do this before the winter was over.
